I recently (November 28, 2009) This 285W/285WT Garmin nüvi 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Traffic received courtesy of the Amazon vine and, after him as much as possible for me with his familiar, I can you say that overall I am very happy with this device very satisfied.

This is my second Garmin GPS, the first was the Garmin 010-00656-00 Nuvi 250W Widescreen Travel Assistant, which I use since December 2007. If anyone reading this review willare interested, I am referring to my person, considering the previous unit.

This particular subject has been introduced recently, is actually an incremental update of the 250W it will be a "simple" unit, although its operation will no longer – many of which may be useful for most people but few, not particularly interested, at least for me. Of course, with additional functions makes the operation more complicated, but fortunately, some may be ignored and / or disabilities, so that the ownerWish.

I must say that I prefer in any case units simple to complex, especially when I drive at 65 mph on a busy road! I do not think GPS units should be (or for use in a moving vehicle a bit) means all sorts of unnecessary "bells and whistles" have been able to impede the transaction, if is not dangerous. I think a phone is a cell phone, a camera must be a camera, radio, radio – and a GPS must have a GPS. Period. It is evidentmany, many people do not agree with my tastes, but if you're one of the few who agree with me (and even if you do not), so I hope that this analysis use it for you. At least you know my point of view.

I noticed that when you try to add new features for newer models, Garmin, keep the surface similar to previous ones. Unfortunately, however well intentioned, which sometimes makes the interface a bit clumsy in operation that anyone who used the new toolto learn quickly. I have mentioned the need to erase data in different locations (screens), it is a disadvantage in trying to retain older interfaces.

Now for my review I will first discuss some of the new features, including 285WT that 250W is not that I dislike and / or use.

For example, there is a new feature called FleetWise. If you check the profile "vehicle" in this function the device to calculate your fuel costs andEstimated gas mileage. Frankly, this is hardly, if used at all, in my opinion, because data are only general approximations. But if you want to delete the data for each trip, and general travel information, if you need it separately in each screen in which data is stored () not less than three screens. To delete the data in the 250W, you must delete the data – the speed and mileage data – from the same screen, and it is relatively simple. Not even 285WT. OfOf course, you do not need to activate a vehicle "profile and" I recommend that in the interest of simplicity, that you ignore this function. After all, what is it really?

The device is also Bluetooth. If you are one of many who have benefited from this feature to use with your phone, this value could be. But, as I do not use Bluetooth cell phone, I turned off.

I also have no interest in the Microsoft Network, I see no need stock market haveReports on my GPS. I have no reports of traffic for which you must pay $ 50.00 per year after the trial period (I can not determine exactly how long the trial period: In the manual, it says: " 3 months, but Amazon, and at least one states to consider further: "9 months.") is however independent of the probationary period, I have no interest in the activation of MSN Direct, and I am sure that you have read in other studies in 2012 to define. And it is certainly easy enough to thoseInformation he removed from a new local radio.

To use MSN Direct, you must return the power cord for use with the Garmin. This includes the MSN receiver. If you have an old power cord, like this Garmin nuvi vehicle power cable GPS itself will function normally, but there is no MSN. That's fine with me – I have three of these old cables. I think in each of our two cars and a home. (I am the current GPS devices in the holdHome even if it is not used.) I do not use the power cord supplied with the receiver with my MSN 285WT. (I recommend that everyone at least one spare cable of any kind to buy, just in case. ")

The case on my old 250W is a flat gray color. The new 285WT has a glossy black finished casing. While the glossy black is a little more attractive (but really – who cares?), It displays all your fingerprints. If gray flat does not work. So I much prefer the olderCase.

You want to have a case for your Garmin, I recommend this: Garmin 4.3-inch pocket [Amazon Frustration]-free packaging. They also wanted a Garmin Portable Friction Mount [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging], which is mounted a much better supplied than the windshield suction cup attached and in any case in some states, the vacuum is prohibited by law.

I had hoped that Garmin would have improved the detour "function, but theynot. On the way, and willing to take a detour, the menu at the bottom to touch the screen and then click on the detour function to the next screen. It's the same thing as the 250W. I hope that Garmin function key bypass on the main screen is the place. Since my opinion is heard.

Okay, what are the "bad" elements. If you're still with me, I am now (on "good" parts, upgrades and they are numerous and large) on the 250W.
<br/> First – the new device automatically turns on the satellite much more quickly than older people. This is very significant and very welcome. Three days ago we visited friends who live to travel about 35 miles to his house Garmin is my "test bed", how it works (the trip is winding up) to see. The two devices we must correctly, but when you restart the 250W, if you like, "Go Home", for some reason the 250W will not be collected until the satellites, we held near aMile from his house. That is odd (because he "knew" where we were when I was off it) and boring. (Of course, we know, like coming home, we do not really need the Garmin – but this is a test. ") This always happens whenever we visit these friends.

Not even 285WT – as soon as I turned into her house, she immediately locked on the satellite. We were very pleased with the rating system's performance.

I also noticed that the locks consistently 285WTon satellites, which in my house, even when all the curtains. Clearly, there is no "line of sight" here, so this performance improvement is amazing and it is much more than the 250W, which are rarely, if ever, (improves automatically to the satellite in my house and is much slower in the locking means of the outdoors, although it is not) a big disadvantage in most cases.

Until now, no matter where we went or how long the device has been switched off or when we were when we turned back, (wewere not always the same place as us when we came out of it), it blocked almost instantly to the satellite. Frankly, this is remarkable.

I should also mention that the starting time on the 285WT is much faster than the 250W.

The next improvement I note is the virtual keyboard. You have the choice of QWERTY or ABCDE keyboard Appearing on the older Garmins. The QWERTY keyboard is a huge improvement. It also has numbers and lettersit is not necessary to go to another screen to enter numbers. In addition to receiving the symbols you (@#$%^), just go to another screen (as opposed to two in contrast 250W), which is displayed at the bottom of the screen keyboard Garmin .

Also removes the control back over 250W (each letter / number you go back), there is a cursor control, and on the 285WT, move the cursor to any number you want, then use the key to backspace to move foundTo delete only the control of an undesirable character and replace them with the right – like on a computer.

All in all, this represents a significant and welcome improvement and is entering the addresses, and so much more convenient.

The information screen has been improved somewhat over the 285T, and is somewhat easier to read and understand quickly. But while showing the new unit the next round (and there is a pictogram showing the tower), the green line "at the top no longer displaysRoute you are traveling, as it appears on the 250W. It shows the next change you need – even if, in return, many miles away. This is a step backwards, in my opinion. You can change the path where you want to see – but you have to touch the magenta line (which is the correct path to your destination) shows. I think that might be the green line, the actual way in which you are driving, must be up to four or five miles from the nearest turning point (we saw the next round when youwanted, by simple contact with the green line, which will then all other steps to your destination), the icon could never turn next) show (as now.

The 285WT shows the speed limit on the route you use, if these data are available for Garmin. Unfortunately, it is not always accurate – so you can better show the road signs and not solely in that capacity. (This is a local road, which was for years a portion of about half a mile in itselflimit of 35MPH. When I finished the first 285WT and rolled on this section, it showed the border to 40 mph. When I registered my device on the Internet, I was "forced" to update the firmware and I took advantage of their free time, an updated map. Then I noticed that now lists the speed limit on that section was 45mph, just like the rest of the road! This is not good! The upgrade bug is even worse! I have seen many people pulled over this stretch of road, the numbernever, I suppose, on how the community is short of money. In any case, I do not think everyone should leave the speed limit on your Garmin, although most of the time, and there appear to be exact.)

This is a very welcome new feature on the 285WT in the Tools section, click the "Tools" at the bottom of the screen (which is better known for reasons Garmin is now right 'adjust the volume, rather than to the left of it, as before).Click the Tools icon, and is directly in the center of the next image is a "Where am I?" Symbol. Click on this and you'll see) the actual coordinates of your location (including altitude , the nearest address, and the next intersection. In addition, and above all, there are buttons for the nearest hospitals, police stations and fuel.

If you drive while you tap the vehicle icon on the screen that appears at the same location information. (It is recommended that your"Co-pilot to do this, however, as with most options, the Garmin a.)

All in all, this is very easy to use and very welcome, even if the nearest address provided is not always spot-on accurate (well) in the vicinity.

There is also the Tools screen, Edit profile "which is a simple way to create or modify the functions of your hometown. This is very useful when you travel, for example, or if you change the setting of pedestrians, to change your home pagePosition your car in a crowded mall. Do so and you will never have problems, you can find your car again! (You can do it with the 250W too, but it is faster and easier with the 285WT.)

I have the screen brightness by 50% (you can find the parameters of the display option to "see color" that), for day and night. Of course, having adjustments, j 'I Garmin color mode back to the car, which changes the screen while the sun sets. My wife and Ifound that 50% of these options works for us, your preferences may vary.

I noticed that I band at 90% set on my 285WT to achieve a comfortable sound level to hear the simple for us, too, is putting on my 250W 70%. However, I am sure that this is a sample to sample variance, and you need to experiment to find your own desired volume.

You must read text-to-speech, when the GPS indicates the names of streets and not just "turnRight or left "on the 250W.

Well, at least on this device. This function is somewhat mixed. First, not all of the provision "vote" decision with text-to-Speech (TTS). Only some of them do – and the voices that may not like. For example, ie, not American English TTS function, American English-Samantha (TTS) is, and that's what we use today. On our 250W, we use British English, which we prefer. The British English is also an option on the 285WT, but "they"TTS function is not. Therefore, if you have a female voice, the UK, you need British English-Serena (TTS) – and "them" terrible, my wife and my opinion. She speaks too fast and not too clear, in our opinion, especially in its pronunciation of street names, and it sounds "Irish" than "British" (not that it matters much). But for us, "it is" unpleasant resonance, and therefore essentially useless. The voices of men in our Limited – until now – the experience difficultfor us to understand in a moving vehicle, yes, now we break our American English-Samantha (TTS) "companion". (We have not tried any of the other languages offered, as they speak only English.)

A small drawback is that the TTS when the name of the road is long, it was unthinkable to happen, in turn, before "they" could it all out! (I think it's a rare event, however, would be. I am still) based on the reading of names of streets in the green line above.
<br/> I personally think it would be preferable for different voices, Garmin and languages to provide an opportunity for all those who have TTS or off, as the user. Maybe one day they will be able to put a burden.

Of course, all functions in the world are useless if the GPS do you want! In this sense, I think the Garmin Nuvi 285WT as well as anyone in the street, regardless of price. Is it perfect? Surely not! When Iin my review of the 250W, says that sometimes you ask too! But it is precisely a unit, how do you go. So far in our limited use, we did not observe differences in the ways of our 285WT elected by the elected representatives of our 250W. But I've upgraded to a Garmin nüMaps Lifetime map updates for our North America 250W and I think it is, it has the same cards that the 285WT. (I am the life "option for most people recommend, however, as I am going for my 250W, I do not buyit is my 285WT, at least for now.)

I think having the most progressive changes that Garmin has a 2007 model, the 250W, on his 2009-model 285WT covered. I think, although I did not know that the same changes to other new models in the 200 series. I think for most of the changes are operational improvements.

The conclusion of this review, I reaffirm that I am very happy with the new 285WT and we welcome theirPerformance. I have a few things that I did not mention – but do not let anyone stop them from buying this GPS. The advantages and disadvantages outweigh STARK changes since the 250W, the 285WT is mostly good and important. And finally, there is no product that is "perfect" – and never will be!

And if they are not "run rings" around the 2)-year-old 250W (with the exception of receiving significantly improving satellite, for the most part, it was stronglycompared to its predecessor, especially in its general user friendliness (improved if certain "functions are disabled), and these improvements are especially obvious to anyone with experience Garmin. Within its class, this GPS is an excellent report price / performance. (There is a constant source of amazement to me just that Garmin is such a great product at a price so low. And by the way, if you're interested in how the quantities GPS as I am, you will notice that the best place to buy an ABSOLUTEthis stuff is Right Here – at Amazon!)

I wish all those who have read my opinion and I hope this has helped some thank you.

I recommend the Garmin Nuvi 285WT for everyone in a "fundamental" of the Global investment interest.

Great GPS Unit – Nathan Beauchamp – Oak Park, IL USA
I have 4 GPS devices over the last 4 years in the property. The first was a Garmin and has been stolen from my car, the 2nd one Tom Tom, who has never worked right, and the youngest one Magelin. I did a complete turn and returned to the Garmin, and I tell you, it's good to be back! I could go into detail about all the things that 285WT works better than my old Magelin and Tom Tom, but suffice it to say that everything should be what this GPS, it must be very good. The touch screen is easy to use and very responsive. The positioning is fast and extremely accurate. The device is well built and the battery life is really good.

When I rebooted the machine, it has never been able to identify my position, even after hours of waiting. I thought the device was only after doing some reading online, I realized that I probably need to change the defective GPS. I did, but was not my position (I live in Chicago, which should be fairly easy). Finally, I tried to update theFirmware using the Garmin Web Updater. After upgrading to firmware 6.10, the unit found my site after about 2 minutes. Since it works correctly. If your device has not been updated, I recommend you take 5 minutes to do. Garmin is very easy with one of the easiest and fastest update the firmware I've ever seen.

The navigation is perfect. I have this on a trip from Chicago to several locations in MI and has guided us correctly every time. AThe main reasons why I have a GPS to find it easy to stores, restaurants, etc., while out of town. La Toma and Tom Magelin both suffered the same problem: you can search by category, but not a specific name! If we find culvers example, you can search for restaurants, and then sort by name, but there was no way to search simply by clicking on "culvers. Garmin is not responsible for this type of research at the very, very helpful.

I can not say enough about theTouchscreen. It is far better than any other I have used. It is a matte surface does not collect the fingerprints nearly as much easier, and the production of address entries. It is also well lit and visible even in bright sunlight. The night mode is great as well and enabled automatically when the sun went down.

The menus and interface are both intuitive and easy to navigate. I had everything I wanted, without reading, do a manual (although I am quite familiar with GPS devicesif it's up to you). I also like the camera's mounting arm can be removed easily. This makes it much easier for your co-pilot to stop the boiler and enter addresses or research. My co-pilot personal of my dear wife really appreciates this feature!

The battery life is very good. I tested and has over 2.5 hours on one charge.

Overall, this GPS is great. Apart from some initial frustration always refer to the unit to our location was an appropriate userExperience. I recommend this GPS to anyone if you have an easy to use but feature-rich unit want.

Making Travel Easier And Safer… – Elliott P. – North Carolina
All in all, I am very pleased with this GPS. It's fast, accurate and on the selling price ($ 119.99, included a $ 10 discount included Discover Card) very good value.

The handling is very intuitive, so even without using the complete guide online (Must Have) Most functions can be downloaded easily accessible, understandable and usable.

Although my particular Motorola phone is not listed as compatible, I could quickly link to the GPS receive andcalls. (GPS is not, however, display the address book from my phone.)

As colleagues Examiner George Hill in his "cons" (# 6) I also had some problems with both frustrating and updating the registry (software and basic map) via the USB cable and the Web site Garmin. Made a few calls (expect a long wait) to Garmin customer support and a pair of long attempts to download or corrupted files to my computer security by blocking software.

Even with little frustrated with theDownloads and registration as soon as it is done is done, and what are the rare cases where we would not need significant re-downloading from the site. You (the USB cable for the MSN download routes and waypoints on the GPS can be used. I sometimes successfully, it had so far.)

Bottom line, bells and whistles aside, it will be very simple and accurate tool for you from point A to point B, and easy to use and occupyNavigate to a specific page directly from the box.

I recommend it (despite the frustration of something can happen, if one opts for the software and update the base map).

Another great GPS from Garmin – with nine months of MSN direct! – TCN –
Now that I have used three different brands of GPS, I can say with confidence that Garmin is still the best cards. I travel a lot and did not address the Garmin can not find. With my old Nextar million and has been a problem.

The screen is a 4.3 inch screen Nice environment without overwhelming the new 5 "and 7" GPS navigation systems, while allowing a pleasant improvement on the 3.5 "display. This particular Garmin traffic receiver and MSN nine months includesService.

The name of the street feature was probably the most important attribute for usability and driver safety. Many, many voices included in the price and you can even update your GPS on the Garmin Web site for more votes, add them too many options in English, by both gender and nationality. The text to speech function allows me to keep my eyes on the road instead of reading the street names to ensure I make the right turn left.

The fix satellite is very fast inactually faster than any other brand I used. It also puts my situation almost immediately and has no noticeable delay.

MSN Direct is a great service, and although many votes, complained ends in Janaury 2012 for me is not serious. I am therefore able to use MSN Direct for two years. That is all we could expect to change since I already services. I suppose there will be a little better. MSN Direct has also been studying 3 coursesMonths to 9 months, so I'm set for some time. A twelve month subscription runs $ 49.99 – is worth it!

My two complaints directly with the MSN service is that the flight tracker is not useful at all. It has a limited number of airlines and flights in the service, and the important moments, I used the airport, the flights I had not been tender inside. The new title with just one sentence.

The MSN Direct Weather Service is incredible. I get ForecastsMulti-day forecast, warning, and can see the radar and rain and snow. The rigor of the season is marked with colors. I can see how time in a given city, before I knew it. The radar can also be extended so that I could weather on the way to look even two hundred miles.

The slideshow function is fine and I loaded a few photos. I wish Garmin had a utility to automatically size and / or crop my photos, like most digital photo frames, includinghave. It is simply too long to edit my photos so that they fill the screen, so I did not take full advantage of this moment. However, it is beautiful pictures of my family that I can watch and share with friends and colleagues.

One last point, even if the cable is bulky and oversized for a vehicle, I understand that in the receiever MSN Direct to build the line, so there is no way to change this if you plan to use MSN Direct. If you lose the power cable, and it breaks, MSNcan not transfer your remaining months until a new cable and cables run around $ 100.
